Analysis: Jones-Tarver 3!
Despite a reported injury to his right hand, and despite being an underdog for the first time in his career, Roy Jones Jr. (49-3, 38 KOs) says he’s refocused on winning the rubber match with light heavyweight champion Antonio Tarver (23-3, 18 KOs). He’s also brought his father back to assist in training with longtime trainer Alton Merkerson in the mix as well. Still, it’s hard to imagine how Roy can turn back the clock effectively enough to win this fight. Tarver and his trainer Buddy McGirt are no fools. They’re expecting the best Roy Jones possible. It’s just not going to be enough to pull off the upset. Roy may go the distance, but he’ll lose a less than scintillating decision in the process.
Warren seeks to block Hatton!
Promoter Frank Warren today began injunctive proceedings against Ricky Hatton in a bid to prevent him fighting WBA light-welterweight champion Carlos Maussa on November 26. Warren and Sports Network insist IBF light-welterweight champion Hatton is under contract for a further three fights. But the Hitman has signed to fight Colombian Maussa at the Sheffield Arena on a non Sports Network show - a showdown Warren will attempt to stop at the High Court on Monday. "Sports Network Ltd have today applied for an interim injunction restraining Ricky Hatton from fighting with any other promoter," said Warren's solicitor Robert Campbell. "That application will be heard at the High Court in London on Monday October 3." Warren added: "I'm very sorry that it has come to this situation and what I have done, I have done with great reluctance. "But I am determined to protect Sports Network's contractual position and ensure Ricky Hatton fulfils his obligations."
La Juan Simon back in action!
Dee Lee Promotions in association with A.M. Boxing Club presents UBA Super Middleweight Champion La Juan Simon (10-0-1, 6 KOs) vs. Don Labbe in an eight round super middleweight contest on Friday October 28, 2005 at the new Wildwoods Convention Center in Wildwood, NJ. Simon, a warrior from the South Philadelphia gyms, stopped hardcore veteran Manu Ntoh in seven rounds back in August. In a special feature attraction, 45-year old Mario Maldonado (29-13-1, 14 KOs) continues the comeback he started this year after a 20-year layoff. Maldonado, who fought Tony Ayala Jr. in 1981, is 2 and 1 in his quest for glory. Also in action is native son heavyweight Chuck Mussachio (3-0, 2 KOs) and 3-time Golden Glove champ Fidel Carter in his pro-debut. The night’s action will feature five pro fights and four amateur fights, showcasing local pros and amateurs of the Wildwood Boxing Club plus the Vineland Boys and Girls Club. The doors open at 6 pm and the first bell is at 7pm. Tickets are $30, $50 and $75 and are available by calling 856-692-1206 or 609-522-1944 and at Ticketmaster (including online).
